As the crescent moon marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar's ninth month, Ramadan,
Saudi Arabia comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere of faith, reflection, and community.
Ramadan, a sacred month in Islam, holds immense significance for Muslims worldwide, and experiencing it in the Kingdom offers a unique opportunity for cultural immersion and spiritual growth.
In this article, we will be talking about all the things you can do in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan.
Understanding Ramadan in Saudi Arabia
The beginning of the Holy month of Ramadan is with the sighting of the crescent moon, as it is based on the lunar cycle. For Saudis, the sighting of the crescent moon is a momentous occasion, often observed with anticipation and reverence.
The Concept of Fasting
Fasting entails abstaining from consuming food and drink through the mouth or nose from dawn until sunset. This act of fasting serves as a means of spiritual purification, self-discipline, and empathy towards those less fortunate.
In the context of Islam, fasting during the month of Ramadan is a fundamental pillar of the faith, where Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and engaging in other physical indulgences from dawn (Fajr) until dusk (Maghrib).
This act of self-restraint fosters a sense of spiritual connection, gratitude, and empathy, as individuals reflect on their actions, seek forgiveness, and deepen their devotion to God. Additionally, fasting promotes mindfulness, self-control, and solidarity within the Muslim community, emphasizing the importance of compassion, charity, and self-improvement.
As the sun sets, at dusk signaling the end of the daylight hours, Muslims break their fast with a meal called iftar, usually done with a date, water, or even salt.
This communal feast is a time for family and friends to come together, share in the blessings of the month, and reflect on the teachings of Islam.
Ramadan is more than just fasting
In Saudi Arabia, Ramadan is more than just a time of fasting; it is a month of self-discipline, prayer, and devotion to God.
Throughout the country, mosques echo with the sound of prayers as believers gather for nightly Taraweeh prayers, (Taraweeh prayers are special nightly prayers performed during Ramadan, at mosques after the evening prayer. Muslims recite portions of the Quran each night, aiming to complete the entire scripture by the end of the month) reciting the Holy Quran, and seeking spiritual enlightenment and soul enrichment. The streets buzz with activity as families shop for special foods and treats to enjoy during the evening meal.
